RECIPE DESCRIPTION:

Fish Vevichathu is a spicy red fish curry popular in Kottayam region of Kerala. Seer Fish is a good choice and goes well with boiled tapioca and rice.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE FISH

Seer Fish½ kg
Chilli powder3 ½ tbsp
Coriander powder1 tsp
Turmeric powder1 tsp
Pepper powder¾ tsp
Fenugreek powder¼ tsp
Gambooge5 pieces (soaked in water for 10 mins)
Curry Leaves10-15
Ginger1 inch piece finely chopped
Garlic6 thinly sliced pieces
Shallots (small onion)8 thinly sliced pieces
Garlic paste1 tsp
Ginger paste1 tsp
Coconut oil3 tbsp
Mustard1 tsp
SaltTo taste

HOW TO PREPARE

  • Make a paste with chilli, coriander, turmeric, pepper and fenugreek powder along with ginger paste and garlic paste. Keep it aside.
  • Take a thick aluminium pan and heat coconut oil, add mustard seeds to crackle.
  • Add curry leaves, sliced ginger and garlic pieces and shallots and sauté for some time.
  • Add the prepared paste to it and sauté for another 5 min in medium flame till it leaves its raw smell.
  • Add 650ml (2½ kg cups) hot water, salt and gambooge and let it boil.
  • Add fish pieces and cook for 5 min in high flame and then for 10 min in low flame.
  • When fish is cooked add ½ Tbsp of coconut oil and a pinch of fenugreek powder and curry leaves.
  • Keep it for 1-2 hours before serving.

TIP: 

Tastes best with rice or boiled tapioca.
